Fleet tracking system is an electronic device put in a vehicle to allow the third party or vehicle owner to track down the vehicle’s location. Most advanced fleet tracking systems now integrated with Global Positioning System (GPS) for results that are more accurate. Some systems also used the element such as satellite communication or cellular technology to transmit the vehicle’s location data to the vehicle owner. The vehicle location information can be viewed through digital maps through the specialized software or Internet.
Nowadays, fleet tracking systems is widely used in transportation industry. Companies with large amount of vehicle (such as police) need some kind of system to track down each vehicle location at specified time. In addition, most consumer vehicles are integrated with fleet tracking system to prevent vehicle loss and as vehicle retrieval device. Police force can now trace the signal produced by the tracker to locate a stolen vehicle, or usually called fleet tracking (SVT). To provide easy positioning of the vehicle, most of the modern fleet tracking system integrates with an automatic vehicle location or AVL. With AVL, vehicle owner will able to locate the vehicle geographic location thru GPS for the vehicle location information and other details.
There are two types of vehicle tracking system, which is “Passive” and “Active”. “Passive” vehicle tracking system store all the information in the device, such as GPS location, heading, speed and occasionally a trigger event such as door open/closed and key on/off. All the data then downloaded to a computer for evaluation after vehicle returns to a predetermined point. On the other hand, the “Active” vehicle tracking system transmits all these data in real time to an owner computer or cellular phone for evaluation.
Fleet tracking systems can also be acquired with affordable price. This is because fleet tracking system is developed and maintained by local authority, and available to civilians with no cost.
