Great info you got there, it lists some purposes of having an external harddrive. How about the pros and cons of having an external harddrive? What can it not do compared to an internal harddrive, is it as fast as an internal harddrive, etc.

I dont think there are any “cons” to having an external harddrive as they very quick to pull info from and store on. There incredible low prices make them a must have. I cant imagine doing anything on the web now without one. All though you still want to be sure you keep any items that cant be or would be hard to replace on a CD/DVD as I suppose the only cons an external could have would be is possible failure.

Great info. I too was using an external hard disk by Western Digital . But unfortunately after a few months , it malfunctioned and was not getting detected in Windows. So I have sent it to the service center , hope it comes back soon repaired.
I think it may have been a virus . I was using it for backing up my files and it’s kind of funny that it failed me quicker than my main drives :(

ALWAYS make a backup. I’ve had a couple externals fail on me.

Nice article, I could not imagine working without my external harddrive, what is mentioned is true, I find it easier to carry my hard drive then taking my note book everywhere.

An external drive is essential to backup my laptop and I use it to sync all of the data on my laptop to at least once every few months so that if the laptop gets a virus or gets damaged then I can restore all of my work from the external drive without any problems. In conjunction with good backup software they are invaluable.

I own this harddrive (The IOMega rugged) and I think the test is a bit misleading. I’ve dropped my IOMega by mistake while it was powered on granted it was only about a 4 inch drop and I received a “write/read error” which I had to replug in the drive. That doesn’t tell me much, but i’m curious if any physical damage was done as a result?

Great info, I have made several custom external hard drives for my clients. I have install a software that allows them to backup entire hard drive. In case of emergency, lost data or damage pc. I can do a recovery with out problems.
So i agree with having a external hard drive is a must.

i suppose one other advantage to using external drives is the fact that it can be disconnected easily/much of the time, especially if you are using it for back up. that way if your computer experiences any electrical problems (or viruses for that matter, i suppose..) you don’t have to worry about it spreading to that drive.

Nice article!! But for me using an external HDD is unthinkable because I lost all my files on my external HDD when it was damaged. That’s when I started using Safecopy online backup, http://www.safecopybackup.com, to backup my files.

With Safecopy I can backup all my files from both my Mac and Pc with just only one account. I can also backup my USB drives and share files as well. I’m very happy with and it’s worth checking it.

Its important to have an extra HDD on your side. simply because files are really getting bigger overtime.

thanks
